Getting ready to purchase your new wheels? If it’s your first time, or if it’s just been a while, you might benefit from reading our guide on what to bring when you buy a car. Here are some basic ways to prepare for this exciting day.

Payment

If you’re financing through a credit union or bank, you will need to bring the check for a preapproved loan. If you’re financing through the dealership, remember to bring your down payment in the form of a personal check, cashier’s check, or credit-card payment. It’s best to call individual dealerships ahead of time to see which types of payments they accept.

Driver’s License

Your license will serve as your form of identification to go along with your payment, and will also show the dealership that you are a registered driver.

Trade-In Vehicle Documents

If you are trading in your previous vehicle as part of the financing for your new car, you must have the title with you to prove that you are the owner. You will have to fill out the title and have it notarized before you can transfer it to the dealership, so make sure to prepare the title for this process ahead of time. In addition to the title, you will also need to have your registration for the vehicle you are trading in.

Proof of Insurance

You cannot drive your new car off the lot without having it insured. If you know what vehicle you’re buying ahead of time, you can call your auto insurance company to add it to your policy before arriving at the dealership. If not, you can call from the dealership to have an insurance card emailed to you and the dealership.

Account Number for Trade-In Vehicles Loan

If you’re trading in a vehicle for which you still have a loan, you must bring with you the account number for that loan. To be extra prepared, call your lender to learn how you can efficiently handle the trade-in transaction.
